I just stumbled across and utterly charming little movie, the offbeat 2007 indie New Zealand comedy Eagle vs. Shark, starring Jermaine Clement from HBO’s Flight of the Conchords. In some ways similar to Napolean Dynamite, telling the story of uneasy love between awkward, socially inept loners, EvS is far far funnier and has a much bigger heart, grounding the story in empathy for its rejected characters, rather than just mocking them.
There are some stylistic animated bits that simply aren’t effective, but those are minor. The laughs are good and frequent, and I enjoyed the movie as much as any other romantic comedy I’ve seen in the last few years, with the exception of Lars and the Real Girl, which is of a rare standard.
