Last call for John McCain

October 15th, 2008 by Dorrk.com

McCain was better tonight, at least in terms of his lucidity on some issues, and he actually had one or two memorable moments. But too many of his answers were muddled, some incoherent (Obama was guilty of this too, but the difference is that he doesn’t show it), and he missed plenty of opportunities. If McCain had clearly explained what Obama had said to the plumber, it would have been much more effective. Instead, he allowed Obama to completely mischaracterize the conversation without much fuss. I had heard the recording of Obama’s comments several times, and didn’t understand what McCain was trying to say. He also punted on Bill Ayers, utterly failing to explain why it’s an issue, and ultimately looking foolish as a result.

The polls are still close enough that anything could happen, but McCain has punted on three occasions to bypass the media filter and make the case against Obama directly to the people. I feel like he just doesn’t like doing that. Yes, it’s often better to sell yourself than tear down the other guy, but Obama has been so unexplored by the media that someone needs to do it, and McCain’s the only one with the platform to do it. That he hasn’t even tried just makes Obama look stronger.
