I think McCain did what he had to: made the case for himself as the actual agent of change as opposed to Obama, and his personal story is flat-out stirring, for whatever that’s worth. He gets points from conservatives for the bits on school choice and free trade, but it seemed to me that a lot of his more vague domestic policy and reform talk reeked of the kind of big government programs we don’t want from Democrats.
I’d love it if a conservative could deliver a big occasion speech like this with the theme: “Tough. Yes some people are hurting right now. And some people will be hurting regardless of who is president. the best we can do for you is get out of your way and give you the opportunity to help yourself. But we’re not going to do anything for you. That’s not our job. Ask your friends, your family, your neighbors for help. We’ll give tax breaks to anyone who does. But we are not your mommy. You can take care of yourself, you pussies.”
Somehow I think that might not fly, but it would be cool to see once.
