I had a friend at Yale who decided to do his Ph.D. on the role of soccer in Nigeria. I laughed when he told me. "You lucky dog. How did you get that subject past the committee?" But it really does make sense. Soccer has a massive impact and two books even deal with the globalization of soccer and the parallels between globalization and international footie. There are probably many disseration topics to be found out of soccer.
Here’s an article http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0606/feature1/#ivory on soccer around the world and its affect on countries.
Of special interest may be the one on how Costa Rica created a hooligan culture. When I was down there, my great old friend Marco (who I’ve known my whole life) was in charge of hosting the Costa RIcan national team at the resort that he runs down there. He was thrilled to be given the job of taking care of them before the Germany cup as he has been a lifelong fan of Saprissa (the local team) and of course the National team.
I was surprised to hear that he doesn’t attend games anymore. He said it was because of the gangs and the new violent culture around soccer. The article fills in some missing pieces for me. It’s too bad….and too stupid.
