RE: World Cup Schedule

May 31st, 2006 No Comments

The Wikipedia article for the cup (here) lists the match times locally in Germany. The first game (GER v CRC) is set to air at 9am here on the west coast (9 hours behind Germany), meaning noon on the east coast (6 hours behind).

World Cup Schedule

May 31st, 2006 No Comments

I’m leaving for Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia and Washington DC tomorrow. I’m deathly afraid I won’t have ESPN2 on that Friday when the World Cup kicks off. If I do, I”ll be in Washington DC and I’ll stay put through Saturday’s games. But Sunday (I think Argentina plays) I’ll miss unless my [...]

World Cup Preview: England’s hope

May 31st, 2006 No Comments

I got to watch England’s penultimate World Cup warm-up game last night, in which they beat a decent Hungarian side 3-1. Even though Wayne Rooney is injured and may not heal in time to play, I’m suddenly optimistic about England’s chances. England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has unleashed a string of oddball selections and tactical [...]

Right Rock

May 30th, 2006 No Comments

In reading some follow-up and discussion of National Review’s list of conservative rock songs, I came across this thought from Ann Althouse in a provocative discussion of Bob Dylan’s right-wing credentials:
To be a great artist is inherently right wing. A great artist like
Dylan or Picasso may have some superficial, naive, lefty things to say,
but underneath, [...]

There are probably many disseration topics to be found out of soccer.

For intellectual bonafides, it’s a favorite topic of Henry Kissinger’s.
Here’s Kissinger on the 1986 World Cup.
Here’s Kissinger on Pele and Beckenbauer.
I read somewhere about 10 years ago that Kissinger has written an entire book on the subject, but haven’t found anything online to substantiate [...]

RE: Gore Running? Why Hillary Sucks

May 30th, 2006 No Comments

I still think Gore will not run. That isn’t to say that he isn’t considering it (even though he says he isn’t), but I think ultimately he will decide against it because he enjoys being free to agitate in ways that aren’t available to either candidates or elected officials.
This post from Rich Lowry today at [...]

Theroux Let’s Bono Have it

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

Yikes. Paul Theroux absolutely rips Bono to shreds in a New York Times Op-ed. Theroux hates NGO’s and thinks that missionaries and NGO’s are the worst thing to have happened to Africa. I have wanted to read his book (and now I will make a point of it).
I think it is not [...]

Soccer Makes the World Go Around

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

I had a friend at Yale who decided to do his Ph.D. on the role of soccer in Nigeria. I laughed when he told me. "You lucky dog. How did you get that subject past the committee?" But it really does make sense. Soccer has a massive impact and [...]

Gore Running? Why Hillary Sucks

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

Is Gore really not running? Dorr doesn’t think so. And with the money Gore is now making, maybe he really is a recovering politician.
This great article explains that Gore is now a much more popular candidate than Hillary. Money quote:
(After discussing Hillary’s veer toward the Right to become a more viable Presidential [...]

Jesus in Japan….me-likes.
Sorry for the delay in response Mister. E. I was in South Dakota sans internet. So yes, I’d be interested in a ticket if you can score one…and I can send a check in the mail. If it doesn’t happen, that’s okay. Technically I was supposed to fly out [...]

Japan is proud home of Christ’s tomb

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

If only they could find a way to incorporate Tom Cruise and 80s pop music, PRN would likely move there:
IN A paddy-lined valley in the far north of Japan is a municipal signpost inscribed: “Tomb of Christ: next left.”
Follow the winding path up into the forest and there, sure enough,
is a simple mound with a [...]

World Cup Preview: France Imploding?

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

This I like to hear:

Coach’s efforts to improve spirit in French squad backfires in spectacular fashion
Excerpt:
The coach has been criticised for his fondness for astrology – he does
not like Scorpios, he once said, and did not include any in the World
Cup squad – and has never been very popular, but he has been fighting a
tricky [...]

Keller may not be the best goalie in the world, but if he wears the same jersey he’s wearing v. Latvia, he may be the best dressed goalie in the world this summer. Nice design and colors.

Apparently this is part of a special "Don’t Tread on Me" kit for the run-up to the World Cup. [...]

Now for a couple of nice things to sayabout the U.S. team:

World Cup Preview: U.S.A

May 29th, 2006 No Comments

I’m watching the U.S. Soccer Team’s’ warm-up game againt Latvia right now. Friday, they played Venezuelam and won 2-0. I understand that they’ve had a pretty grueling training schedule leading up to the World Cup in June, so they could be worn out, but they look very, very ordinary. Maybe better in their approach play [...]

The tickets for the August 11th show are apparently already on sale. You wouldn’t know this from the Peppers website, which merely says "Presale ended." Follow the link there and it takes you to Ticketmaster, which is selling for most of the legs of this tour.
Ticketmaster, however, is not selling the tickets [...]

Al Gore’s sequel to The Day After Tomorrow catches some grief from Libertarians:
Gore claims that sea level rise could drown the Pacific islands,
Florida, major cities the world over, and the 9/11 Memorial in New York
City. No mention is made of the fact that sea level has been rising at
a rate of 1.8 mm per year [...]
