I’ve just finished reading two books back to back on African history and let me tell you….it’s enough to make you kill yourself. It’s absolutely miserable beyond belief. It seems that not very many elections (particularly in West Africa) can really be called legitimate.
Having said that, I’ve read a few analysis of the election and it seems that Weah’s big problem is that he really attracts the young male vote (as you can imagine). So in Liberia that means violent criminals, former child solidiers and the like. I don’t think Weah has intentionally aligned himself that way. His opponent (Africa’s first woman head of state now?) says that Weah has only recently been surrounded by some bad handlers and she thinks he’s just had his campaign kind of taken over by thugs.By claiming fraud Weah took the huge risk of destablilizing the country. His own opponent thinks he didn’t realize that.
Apparently the US and some other big whigs have stepped in to try encourage Weah to drop it and I think he might have. Although as I’ve learned (I guess we’ve all known this but boy am I realizing it now), when you are looking for news from Africa it’s not always easy.
Anyway, I hope Weah can come away from this with his hands clean because he does seem to be a good guy. I think it’s looking like he was just naive and kind of in over his head. It’s probably a really good thing if he doesn’t win. I’d hate to see him suffer from corrupt people around him or worse yet preside over a country in a revolution or even be killed. Anyway, Africa is really sad.
