Interesting article about a respected Jordanian journalist that has met with Al-Qaeda leaders and shares the 7 steps they want to take toward the Islamic Caliphate. Even if they don’t accomplish all 7 steps, just 1 or 2 is enough to start total chaos. Furthermore, the West’s (blame ourselves and America first) attitude only raises the chances that many of these steps are completely plausible. http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,369448,00.html
Of course the idea that Muslims will all come together in harmony is complete lunacy, but they are still capable of bringing about massive turmoil. I think Mister E is right to suggest Iran may be the next big pivotal thing. The irony is that it would be better for there to be a series of severe terrorist attacks before we (USA, Israel and/or Europe) are forced to confront Iran. If things continue just as they are now, we will play the Iran card incorrectly and guarantee another war, massive economic instability, and a Fourth Turning for sure. Once again, the challenge of facing a Pre-Modern Enemy in Post-Modern times is the real quagmire. It’s going to cause us decades of horrific pain.
When I first read the 4th turning, I had a hard time imagining how a country as powerful and wealthy as the United States could find itself so trapped at the beginning of the 21st century. Well, now it seems obvious. The new global interdependence (globalization) combined with the post-modern ethics of the world’s diplomatic stage has created a trap. And, that’s exactly how that other "invulnerable era"–the beginning of the 20th century saw its fortunes fade and WWI and WWII begin. "History does not repeat, it rhymes." Mark Twain.
Okay, we’re off to catch a plane to London in a few hours. At least 2 of the places we are visiting are on high alert right now (London and Rome). We’ll also be living with some Dutch people near the German, Dutch, Belgian border. I’ll be curious to hear their opinions about their country.
