Amy and I haven’t had any non-family guests over to our new house yet,
but today we were greeted by some surprise visitors. After not paying
much attention to it for a few hours, I finally dragged my sorry ass
off the couch to investigate a strange sound in the office/family room.
After one minute of sleuthing, I determined [...]

Insignificant, but welcome, change
June 27th, 2005 No Comments
Here at Dorrk.com we try to give props to the creative lives of our
contributors, so we list links to the other web sites of the Byrons in
the column to the left (below where it says "Related Sites," genius).
Up until a few minutes ago, that list included a fancy RSS feed from M.E. Russell’s fine CulturePulp.com
which [...]

Every three seconds someone dies from conditions of extreme comfort…
June 27th, 2005 No Comments
With that Live8 concert coming up, I’ve been hearing this one statistic
repeated ad nauseum: "every three seconds a child dies of extreme
poverty," and when you do the math it’s a pretty horrible number:
that’s almost 30,000 children dying a day, and 10.5 million dying a
year, which sounds just horrific. Groups like the One Foundation and
Make Poverty [...]

My Dad

This is for the Byrons who know me and my Dad. My dad has had a stroke. For 2 days he had some paralysis around his mouth, arm, and leg on his left side. The paralysis is gone now but they are telling him to take it easy and get in [...]

The Dice is Back

I’m not much of a fan of Andrew "Dice" Clay, but this very short recent appearance on CNNfn (of all networks) is quite funny, if only for the look on the anchor’s face.

I’m surprised that the proposed amendment that gives Congress jurisdiction over flag desecration passed the House today. I personally don’t favor any such laws, even though I think most flag-burners are extremely stupid with little understanding of symbolism. I thought that the House had more than enough loony, paranoid leftists to shoot this down, but [...]

The Swill on Hill

There’s an interview at National Review Online in which Kathryn Lopez interviews the author of that new book about Hillary Clinton and, thankfully, takes him to task for his more sensational claims. Stories like the one focused on here aren’t good for politics for either side, and, as most conservatives should agree, aren’t really appropriate [...]

2 Very Different Books (part 2)
June 21st, 2005 No Comments
Unlike Sting, Robbie Williams comes off as totally honest about himself. A former drug addict and drinker, totally insecure, addicted to sex, and absolutely certain his career will end soon. Of course, RW is huge in Europe and Asia–by far the biggest star in the world from Europe. Throughout the book, you [...]

2 Very Different Books
June 21st, 2005 No Comments
On our vacation, I decided to take 2 books that would be very light-reading. I chose Sting’s "autobiography" entitled "Broken Music" and a book called "Feel" about UK popstar Robbie Williams.
Wow! These turned out to be two very interesting choices. Never would I have thought that the Robbie Williams book would [...]

Oh man, sometimes I hate Bend. The local newspaper doesn’t have its own critic: They use Ebert reviews. I feel dirty after reading one. So, I saw the new "Batman" movie on opening day. As I expected, it was quite good. Ebert seems to feel the movie was [...]

In Thailand

hey dudes. I haven’t responded because I’m on vacation in Phuket, Thailand. We saw the Jackson verdict somewhere in transit. I agree with Eric. Apparently, they had stronger cases but they went with this one. Sneddon messed up bad. Maybe he thought the cancer angle and the kidnapping [...]

RE: I need somebody’s help

Could anyone suggest a resource to me, where I could search under any
album title and find out how many copies it has sold? And how
about books? I’m looking for a site like that as well.
Please help.
The closest I’ve found to a thorough online music database is The All Music Guide, but it’s contents are pretty [...]

The Wayward World of Edutainment
June 13th, 2005 No Comments
I’ve noticed a couple of strange diversions of purpose within my 19-month-old daughter’s edutainment diet recently.
We took her to the Zoo on Sunday, and were surprised to find some of
the animals — like the Lions — MIA. Apparently Oregon’s Washington
Park Zoo no longer carries any big cats aside from tigers and leopards.
I seem to recall [...]

Diversity within the U.S.: A question for our liberal bloggers
June 10th, 2005 No Comments
In an email conversation with an old high school acquaintance who now
lives in Canada, we touched briefly on politics and he expressed some
concern over the influence of Christian conservatives on U.S. politics,
and mentioned several key issues as items of dismay: the Kansas School
board’s move to de-emphasize evolution in schools, gay marriage and
adoption, and he threw [...]

As much as I hate to disrupt the 24-hour Tom Cruise-watch going on
around here lately, how about we focus on some of the music that’s been
recommended around here recently?
Mister E. blogged about a couple of his recent acquisitions: Bruce Springsteen’s Devils and Dust and Fiona Apple’s underground release of Extraordinary Machine. I’ve listened to both [...]

I’m assuming there’s at least one person out there who finds the Cruise scientology thing interesting. I know at least one reader that does so this is for them.
Another thing is that Scientology prays on people when their vulnerable or with their vulnerabilities. Tom Cruise was a dyslexic actor. Now Katie [...]

I heard a fascinating report on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show today that if Michael Jackson were to be convicted and jailed, he would probably end up in the same prison for high-profile "target inmates" as Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan. (Here’s an MSNBC report on it.)
Can you imagine the rec room conversations between these two [...]

Pangs’ Indonesian Swindle!
June 9th, 2005 No Comments
A while back, Matt related this exciting offer from the Asian Quincy Jones, Hita, regarding Matt’s indie rock act Pangs.
As promising as Hita’s offer seemed, a dorrk.com reader reports that Hita is something of band slut, and a stalking and/or senile one, at that.
