Here’s the M.E. review of Ocean’s Eleven which I enjoyed but did not fully read to avoid spoilers. I thought it was really well-written.
After having seen the movie, these are some of my impressions. Before going I told J that it is going to “to have forced attempts at duplicating that witty-repoire from the first film,” “it will not be as good,” “but it will still be a lot of fun.” That’s exactly what happened.
Witty-repoire: I have to disagree a bit with M.E. on this. I think the dialogue sounds forced and not as amusing in this movie. But it doesn’t detract that much.
Plot: M.E. is right when he says that the plot cannot withstand close scrutiny. A number of the plot twists were just beyond implausible. I found myself how on earth something happened. It got to be so unbelievable and very confusing—yet always fun.
Matt Damon: I did not like what they did to Matt Damon’s character. In the first one, he always wanted to have a bigger role in the heist. But he wasn’t this goofy, dork totally out of his element. I kind of resented the way they changed his character just to help them achieve their wacky dialogue moments.
Zeta Jones/Julia Roberts: Zeta is gorgous, Julia Roberts looks and always has looked to me like a pteradactyl. She’s hideous. I could write a 600 page tome on how much I despise that ugly woman. Nice huh? Rumors were that the two did not get along on the set. Two sex symbols with undeserved Oscars. Meow!
Bernie Mac: It’s amazing how small the parts were of some of the key players. In the case of Bernie Mac, I was glad since I find him unfunny 99% of the time.
Brad Pitt: What can I say about this pathetic guy. I genuinely feel sorry for him. Always having to eat in every scene he’s in, in every movie, because he can’t–for the life of him—ever act natural. That’s his little acting gimmick. Eat a potato chip, a hot dog, slurp a chilli dog, chew on gum, eat a banana–in movie after movie. And he’s still never natural. I don’t buy him at all in this role (or any other role) but the movie still works because Clooney makes it work despite Pitt’s limited acting skills.
Don Cheadle: His cockney accent is so bad. Stupid idea to have ever tried that.
Well, I really enjoyed this movie despite all its flaws so kudos to Soderbergh and Clooney for making this work. It was a fun ride albeit retarded quite often. I didn’t feel it was very true to the first movie.
