The golden age and the other stuff

March 31st, 2004 by Matt

There are many great choices these days.

Arrested Development is easily my favorite show these days. It’s always over too soon, even though it has seemingly dispensed more amazing jokes in one episode than one might glean from watching the entire runs of even great shows like Cheers.

Sadly, in addition to the fabulous Fox Sunday night line up and the could-be-pretty-good-soon Wonderfalls, I have also caught two episodes of Law & Order SVU lately (just poor timing on my channel surfing and a wife who finds these shows put her to sleep quickly). What a complete piece of garbage. Lacking in any kind of creativity, the plots are stolen, the writing is god awful, the acting makes Buffy S1 Boreanez look like early DeNiro… it’s a true monstrosity. More than that, its reliance on stock characters and supposedly “real” plots (that unreally wrap up in one episode) create a world in which every imaginable stereotype is presented as a truth. Coupled with the law enforcements characters’ complete disregard for the constitution, the show plays like some bizarre facist community theater exercise. Anyway, it had me wondering where this franchised procedural cop stuff sits in the pool of turds.
