ESPN had a special on David Beckham last night. It was about how he’s become the world’s most famous athelete, even though he’s probably only in the “top 20….between the top 5 and the top 10″ soccer players in the world.
They bascially focused on the massive PR machine that is behind Beckham and suggested that one reason Alex Ferguson got rid of him is because Beckham was becoming bigger than Man Utd. and that Ferguson is an old time soccer guy who has no patience for the new celebrity athelete.
I was really shocked by how choregraphed his life has become. How he has become really conscious of marketing himself not just as a product for sales, but as a celebrity—and he likes it!
All of this really made me see more clearly Victoria’s influence on him. What kind of blue-collar British guy would be posing for a gay magazine trying to win over the gay market? Obviously the fashion and all the other limelight stuff reaks of Posh Spice.
The documenatary that I saw in HK about the Beckham’s was interesting. David Beckham came off as the most insecure guy on Planet Earth–and Victoria definitely wore the pants in the family. Victoria is not that well known in the USA and has not even done well with her music in the British market. But by turning herself and Beckham into the new Prince Charles and Lady Diana, it seems like a clever way of staying in the limelight.
They both seem terribly dependent on fame. They better hope his career doesn’t go badly in the next few years, because her career is going nowhere. Anyway, it was kind of disheartening to see how “hollywood” they’ve become. It seems like they (he) is setting himself up for a a real let down. Jordan was unusually lucky getting to be the man from 1984 to 1997. I doubt Beckham’s run will be that long eh?
